Job Summary:

There is one position that will be filled at the Meteorologist II level, commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience. Please note that this position requires weekend/holiday shift work on a rotational basis. Duke Energy is seeking an experienced meteorologist to join its Meteorology Team that provides weather support and expertise to numerous internal groups across the enterprise.

In this role, under the general direction of the Meteorology Manager, the successful candidate will be involved in operational demand, renewable & weather forecasting for the various Duke Energy Service Areas and directly responsible for supporting the company’s generating unit commitment and energy marketing and trading activities. This includes communicating the weather forecast risks and uncertainties to energy traders and operational leadership.

This role will be involved in short-term load/demand forecasting and analysis as well as renewable resource (e.g., solar and wind) forecasting and analysis. The successful candidate will also be involved in supporting the enterprise emergency preparedness operations during major storm events.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: support for asset management of hydro generation (basin precipitation forecasts), climate analysis and consultation services to the enterprise on a wide range of projects and issues.

Responsibilities & Duties:

• Provide short, medium and long-term load, renewable & weather forecasts and analysis to support energy marketing and trading functions. Analyze numerical weather prediction models and effectively communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Provide daily weather outlooks for energy marketing and enterprise operations.• Involvement in the daily load and renewable resource forecasting processes. This includes, but is not limited to, managing load and renewable resource forecasts, developing hypotheses to improve forecasting accuracy for load and renewables, and working with the team to research, develop and create plans to enhance load and solar forecasting• Owns and manages weather data sources.• Provide forecasting support and consultation services for high-impact weather events (e.g., hurricanes and severe storms), including outage/resource modelling and storm planning calls.• Develops hypotheses to improve forecasting accuracy for load and renewables.• Provide meteorologist insight and forecasting support to operational groups and other internal groups, as necessary. Provide weekend and holiday support for the corporation on a rotational basis.• Identifies and alerts Operations division to meteorological events capable of jeopardizing system reliability.• Support the team’s routine and special projects in order to accomplish business objectives, such as long-term climate studies and regulatory data requests.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science and three (3) or more years related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Meteorology

  • Five (5) or more years of related work experience

  • Certified Consulting Meteorologist

  • Experience in load demand forecasting for energy markets

  • Experience with intermittent resource forecasting (i.e. solar/wind)

  • Experience with numerical weather prediction models, analyzing uncertainty within weather conditions, and communicating uncertainty on renewable and load forecasts based on the uncertainty present.

  • Ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.

  • Strong analytical, verbal and written communication and documentation skies required, with a demonstrated attention to detail.

  • Ability to work effectively in an open, team environment

  • Strong computer programming skills within Python, R-Studio language, Unix/Linux or Perl
